Homework Hangout

Nehemiah Community Development Center operates Homework Hangout, an after school tutoring program for all grades. The mission is to a bridge the gap in serving as a supplemental education agent to assist schools, parents and students.

As an after-school homework help center, "Homework Hangout" has served children from throughout the parish of Caddo.  Students from kindergarten to freshmen in college have benefitted from assistance received in the homework center.

Our targeted population has always been students who do not have homework help in the home.   Volunteers agree to spend their time assisting in the effort of helping a child do better in the classroom and ultimately become a better citizen in the community.  We are different in that we can offer one-on-one assistance and encouragement when needed.

Students needing assistance in Math and Reading attend "Homework Hangout" throughout the year. Our determining factor for qualifying students for the program has been their enrollment in an underperforming school; however, other students have come on the basis of residence in the Queenborough Neighborhood.

High school students come for assistance on the ACT by using software provided by the after-school program.

With the implementation of Common Core, some parents are seeking help with reading problems they are not familiar with. We make every effort to assist.

To further promote the academic experience, "Homework Hangout" has other fun programs and activities: Summer Camp and Back-To-School Bash.

Summer Camp - Homework Hangout is providing enrichment activities ranging from letter writing to drama, which are made available to students from throughout the parish. Activities are conducted by volunteers and two meals, breakfast and lunch, are served daily.  Students are privileged to hear inspirational speakers each morning, attend cultural field trips and participate in conflict-resoluton sessions.  Activities such as exercise sessions, biblical poetry, science experiments, storytelling/readings, presentations from industry, parish and city police departments, petting zoo and pony rides, and acting workshops/class.

Back-To-School Bash - This has become an annual event for the neighborhood.  School supplies are distribued to students attending camp as well as others in the area. The neighborhood has opened up to provide some of the school supplies needed for the give-away.

Homework Hangout Hours of Operation: Monday & Thursday 3:30 pm to 5:45 pm
